TheraQuest Biosciences
Announces Discovery of Analgesic Synergy with Narcotics
Blue Bell, Pennsylvania – September 10, 2004 – TheraQuest
Biosciences, a development stage pain management company today
announced that it has made a significant discovery which forms
the basis of a new pain drug synergy technology platform. TQ-1016
is the first product from this technology platform. It is a safe,
commercially available drug (non-analgesic) that significantly
potentiates the analgesic effects of opioids.
Najib Babul, PharmD, President and Chief Executive Officer of
TheraQuest stated, “results from our experiments in preclinical
models of pain demonstrate that TQ-1016 increases the potency
of morphine 300 to 400%. We believe the net effect in humans
will be a more robust analgesic effect, reduced opioid dose requirement,
reduced side effects and less tolerance.” TheraQuest has
filed an international patent application for this discovery.
The research was conducted at a leading contract drug development
organization.
"TheraQuest believes that the potential implications of this
technology go beyond one drug combination. TQ-1016 and other
drugs in its class can be expected to enhance the effects of
all opioids. If the results are confirmed in Phase II clinical
trials, this discovery could be commercially exploited to yield
a number of analgesic combinations with better efficacy and
tolerability and reduced narcotic tolerance” notes Babul.
